The Director of Rehabilitation Services is responsible for directing and coordinating all managerial and clinical functions and activities relating to the provision of physical, occupational, and speech therapy and athletic training services. Responsibilities involve strategic planning relating to the hospitals mission and values, identifying and responding to patient and customer needs, fostering communication, performance improvement for the department and hospital, and fiscal management. As a member of middle management, the Director is responsible for participation in leadership efforts relating to inter-departmental operations and problem solving. The Director serves as the primary liaison between the department and medical staff.
Plans, organizes and supervises the operation of Rehabilitation Services according to hospital policies, sound clinical principles, and existing regulatory requirements. Integrates services into the hospitals primary functions.
Coordinates and integrates interdepartmental and intradepartmental services.
Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.
Works to continuously assess and improve department performance of care and services provided.
Maintains quality control programs as appropriate.
Participates in selection of sources for needed services not provided by the department or hospital.
Assists in recruitment, retention, interviewing, and hiring Rehabilitation Services staff. Responsible for recommending disciplinary action and terminations when necessary.
Determines staffing, establishes work schedules and assignments for department personnel.
Completes employee performance appraisals with the developmental objectives of improving individual capabilities and performance. Encourages individual ownership and accountability for their work. Determines qualifications and competence of department personnel.
Provides orientation to new employees, as needed. Organizes and supervises continuing education and inservice training opportunities for all department employees.
Makes recommendations and administers the wage and salary program for the department in accordance with the hospital program.
Manages department expenses and purchases.
Makes recommendations and assists in preparation of an annual operating budget and capital expense budget. Is responsible for departmental adherence to the budget.
Attends and participates in Leadership Group Meetings. Reports meeting information to the department in a timely manner.
Recommends to administration as needed and appropriate to meet patient and customer needs:
The purchase of additional equipment
The addition or reduction of personnel
Changes in departmental policy
Changes in physical plant (space) needs
Changes in practices and procedures relating to the general function of the department
Change in priorities for department services based on needs.
Prepares and maintains appropriate records and reports relating to department activities, budget, performance, quality assessment and improvement, patient satisfaction, and other matters.
Serves as an active member of “middle management” and participates as appropriate in the decision-making process. May serve on various committees and task forces relating to hospital problems and projects.
Develops and manages contract services offered or utilized by the Rehabilitation Services Department.
Responsible for ensuring that the department meets all applicable laws, regulations, and requirements of the various groups and agencies that inspect, accredit, and survey the hospital.
Performs special assignments as required.

Licensure/certification: Director must be licensed to practice in the State of Indiana and Ohio.
Education required:Minimum of a master’s degree in a therapy field. Additional education in healthcare or business management is preferred.
Must maintain active CPR certification.
