About the job:

Obtains laboratory specimens per appropriate provider orders using established collection policies and procedures. Ensures proper patient identification of all samples. Provides an established standard of customer service to all patients, providers, clients, and coworkers.

What you will do:

  1. Actively demonstrates the organization’s mission and core values and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.

  2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.

  3. Receives assignments and obtains required supplies and equipment necessary to carry out tasks. Travels to patient care units as necessary.

  4. Verifies patient identification and explains blood drawing procedure to patients in order to allay fears and elicit cooperation.

  5. Performs venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians’ orders.

  6. Instructs patients in specimen collection methods and procedures and obtains specimens for culture and analysis.

  7. Labels, dates and records specimens obtained, and distribute same to appropriate laboratory areas for analysis and interpretation.

  8. Cleans, sterilizes equipment, instruments and work area following safety, cleanliness and infection control procedures.

  9. Travel to outreach client facilities for specimen collection and transport as assigned. Adheres to all established professional standards when representing Saint Joseph Health System at outreach sites.

  10. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

What we are looking for:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Post high school education through an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.

Licensure: PBT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Experience desirable but willing to train. Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred. Customer Service experience preferred.

Other Job Requirements:

Computer experience. Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques preferred. Ability to respond appropriately to instructions. Maintain patient confidentiality.

Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.
