As a Surgery Scheduler Medical Assistant , you'll schedule all surgeries, communicate effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers. You'll also perform the duties of a Medical Assistant.
A Day in the life:
Arrange pre-op testing for patients
Arrange the physicians schedule around their surgeries
Assist other areas of the office as needed
Assist with arranging meetings for physicians
Assists with patient procedures. Based on the practice needs and specialty, this may include procedures such as suture removal, wart and mole removal, pap smears, colposcopies, minor surgeries, etc. Administers EKGs and Rhythm Strips, injections, immunizations, vision, and hearing tests, measurement of O2 saturations and venipunctures and other specialty related procedures as required by the practice.
Complete FMLA paperwork
Contacts hospital and outside sources regarding lab results, X-Ray results, and ER reports; phones pharmacies to authorize prescriptions; contacts nursing homes regarding patient orders; contacts patients to relay test result information; returns patients phone calls with the provider's recommendations for their care
Pre-certifies hospital admissions and referrals
Disinfect exam rooms, procedure room, and laboratory
Straightens reception area
Escorts patients to exam rooms and checks vita signs as needed
Interviews patient to assess needs.
Records reason for visit, reconciles current medications with established medication profile, verifies allergies
Instructs patients on how to prepare for examination
Obtains the necessary authorization prior to surgery
Performs lab tests
Prepares exam rooms for patients; prepares procedure tray as necessary
Schedule all surgeries and offsite diagnostic tests
What you will need:
Diploma from ABHES or CAAHEP accredited Medical Assistant training program; or a diploma from a non-accredited Medical Assistant program +1 year of experience; or a high school diploma + 7 years of experience
Medical Assistant Certification required within 6 months of hire; Qualifying certifications/registrations: CMA (AAMA), NCMA (NCCT), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA), and NRCMA (NAHP)
Two or more years experience in surgery scheduling required
Medical terminology and understanding and comprehension of insurance / healthcare industry
ICD coding and insurance knowledge / experience preferred
